AfriKids

AfriKids helps communities in Ghana rise up against the learning crisis and take action to give their children stronger starts and brighter futures.

Afrikids unlock the power of local communities. Together, Afrikids equip them with the tools to keep their children safe, in school and learning, breaking the cycle of poverty for the next generation.

Tomorrow’s leaders are not learning

By 2050, 40% of the world’s children will be African. And right now, nearly 9 in 10 children in Sub Saharan Africa are not learning – unable to read a simple text by age 10.

In northern Ghana where AfriKids is rooted, the crisis is critical. Seven in 10 families live in multi-dimensional poverty and the impacts of climate change are taking effect and threatening livelihoods. As a result, 1 in 4 children are not in school. Across the region, half of all women and girls have never been to school.

With support from Players of People’s Postcode Lottery we can change this – and break the cycle of poverty for the next generation.

A world where all children can learn

Global studies have shown that if all women completed just primary education, child mortality would drop by a sixth, maternal death would be cut by two thirds, and a single year of primary school increases future earnings by 5-15% for boys and 10-20% for girls.

Ensuring education for Africa’s children – equipping them to break the cycle of poverty and help tackle global issues like climate change, social inequality and conflict - is not only the right thing to do, but critical to the future of humanity.

Unlocking the power of local communities

We believe in the power of local communities to create deep and lasting change for children. Our ‘Means, Motive, Opportunity’ model helps communities turn challenges into opportunities:

·       Ensure means: Help communities prioritise and manage the costs of education

·       Build motive: Foster community understanding, faith and commitment to education

·       Create opportunity: Help communities drive and demand improvements to the quality education.
